Picks and Pans Review: Get a Grip

Aerosmith

Less melody, more mayhem. That's the formula for these wired rock warhorses from Boston. Full of nasty guitar meltdowns, the band's first album since 1989's multiplatinum Pump seems primarily the work of guitarist Joe Perry. The influence of lippy lead singer and co-captain Steve Tyler can be heard on the few radio-receptive tunes like "Crazy" and "Livin' on the Edge."

Though Grip is far from gripping, the fact that Aerosmith can still summon this kind of prodigal, almost juvenile energy must encourage Sony Records. The band has one more disc to deliver on Geffen before its $30-plus million, four-record deal with Sony even kicks in. (Geffen)
