Picks and Pans Review: The Malcolm X Jazz Suite

Terence Blanchard

Trumpeter Blanchard has reassembled the stately, elegant music he wrote for the film Malcolm X into a stately, elegant suite for his jazz quintet. While some of the performances hew too respectfully to the outline of the film compositions—man does not live by stately elegance alone—Blanchard & Co. often bring their improvisations to a fever pitch without losing the essential gravity of the movie's themes.
