>DANCES WITH WOLVES: Kevin's Night to Howl
ALSO KNOWN AS Overdoes the Scenery and Offers a Great Parody Title Target, this is Kevin Costner's directing-starring epic. He is an 1860s cavalryman living among the Sioux. The idea of humanizing the Sioux was fine, but these people are so all-noble they're as implausible as the savages in old Westerns. Then there's convenient white hostage Mary McDonnell, who translates for and smooches with Kevin while modeling designer buckskins. You have to compromise somewhere. (Orion)
