I have to admit I'm a Holmes-boy. Sherlock, that is. So this is a good month for me. In two weeks Jeremy Brett returns as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's master detective in a five-parter for Mystery! And in this less-than-elementary outing, Charlton Heston plays the man in the deerstalker cap as he trails a cursed treasure—a maharaja's chest of jewels. Heston's son Fraser based the screenplay on Paul Giovanni's play, which ran on Broadway in 1978 with Paxton Whitehead as Holmes.

Richard Johnson, Susannah Harker and Simon Callow costar in a flimsy film in which the writing, acting and atmosphere all lack pungency. Personally speaking, even if they cast Kathie Lee Gifford as Sherlock, I'd probably watch it. You, however, don't have to.
