The latest chapter in the career of controversial environmental performance artist Christo has come to a tragic close. On Oct. 26, a California woman, Lori Rae Matthews, 33, from Camarillo, was killed when one of the 1,760 20-foot, 485-pound yellow umbrellas that Christo had installed in the Tejon Pass north of Los Angeles was toppled by 40-mph winds and crushed her against a boulder. The exhibit, which also included the simultaneous planting of 1,340 blue parasols in Ibaraki, Japan, was closed two days early, said Christo, "out of respect for her memory."...

John Kobal, 51, an Austrian-born film historian and journalist, died on Oct. 28 in London. A 1958 encounter with actress Marlene Dietrich—who sang "Falling in Love Again" for him—so enchanted the 18-year-old film buff that he tried to obtain a copy of every Dietrich photo ever taken. The collecting bug soon took hold, and he went on to amass the world's largest group of cinema stills.

Actress Kyra (Pyrates) Sedgwick, 26, and actor Kevin (He Said, She Said) Bacon, 33, are expecting their second child next spring. The couple have a son, Travis, 2.

Prosecutors in San-ford, Fla., have decided not to press shoplifting charges against ex—screen siren Hedy Lamarr, 78, who failed to pay for $21.48 worth of merchandise at an Eckerd drugstore in August. Once hailed as the world's most beautiful woman, the star of Let's Live a Little and Samson and Delilah signed an agreement promising not to break any laws for a year, lest the charge be reinstated....

Things have certainly looked mo' better for Bill Lee, 63, noted jazz bassist and father of filmmaker Spike Lee. On Oct. 24, the elder Lee was arrested during a police sweep of a Brooklyn, N.Y., park and charged with misdemeanor drug possession after he allegedly was found to be carrying a glassine envelope containing about $20 worth of heroin. Lee, who gained prominence in the early '60s, scored two of his eldest son's films—She's Gotta Have It and Mo' Better Blues.

Former vice presidential daughter Eleanor 31, and her second husband, Greg Malban, 30, have separated in what has been characterized as a cordial split. Wed last June, both are Chicago radio personalities—she at WKQX, where she delivers entertainment news, and he, until recently, at WYTZ, where his on-air tag was Thunder.

Country Couple Cavalcade: Country star Lorrie Morgan, 31, widow of fellow singer Keith Whitley, who died of alcohol poisoning in 1989, married the new man in her life. Brad Thompson, 31, on Oct. 27. Thompson drives country music heartthrob Clint Black's tour bus; Black, who two weeks ago married actress Lisa Hartman, was Thompson's best man....

Country singer Jimmy Dean, 62, married Donna Meade, 38, also a country singer, on Oct. 27, at their home on the banks of the James River outside Richmond. Music at the riverboat reception included a duet by the pair.
