MAKING BLONDIE OVER

She spent 60 years in housedresses before her, uh, entrée into the work force as a caterer in the Sept. 22 Blondie strip. So, on the hunch that Ms. Bumstead could use tips on power dressing, PEOPLE asked a few career-clothing companies to drape her in the latest on-the-job fashions. All agreed that she is in awesome shape for a senior citizen but vetoed as unprofessional any outfits that called attention to her curves.

Meanwhile, Dean Young, who has written Blondie since his father, Chic Young, the strip's creator, died in 1973, is inspired by catalogs from stores such as Bloomingdale's and Talbots. "I'm Blondie's personal shopper," he says.
