Suzanne Pleshette and Debbie Reynolds play former childhood friends who part bitterly and take divergent paths in life. Pleshette is a snooty concert pianist and Reynolds is a meddling mother and a beautician—Hollywood's overworked signifier of the plain Jane. When their kids (Courteney Cox Arquette and John Terlesky) marry each other and have a baby, it brings the two antagonists back into firing range of each other.

It's a rather dull effort that manages to take Pleshette's wonderfully withering way with hauteur and coat it with marshmallow. But the cast works diligently to earn the movie's all's-well ending.
