IT WAS WINTER HOLIDAY SEASON IN ASPEN, AND THE ROCKIES retreat was just as it should be this time of year—knee-deep in snow and celebs. Among the avalanche of stars fleeing Hollywood for the high country: Barbra Streisand, flexing her pecs at a local health club; Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, hosting a get-together for artist Peter Max; and Sly Stallone, taking the stage at the China Club to sing an off-color barnyard ditty. And even the most jaded Aspenite had to notice the high-density turnout at a Don Henley-emceed benefit Dec. 27 to preserve Walden Woods in Massachusetts. Ivana Trump, Cher and Jack Nicholson were among those paying $250 each to hear singer Maryel Epps at the new club Tatou.
Not that every Aspen event was so stellar. There was also a reception for Ted Conover, the author whose book Whiteout: Lost in Aspen skewers the town as a Shangri-la for the rich and shameless. Result: not a celeb in sight.
