Actress Virginia Field, 74, frequently cast as the "other woman" in her more than 30 films, died of cancer on Jan. 2 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She was a contract player at Twentieth Century Fox during the '30s and '40s, and her films include Lloyds of London, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and Waterloo Bridge....

Writer Frank Yerby, 75, the Georgia native whose 32 historical novels often dealt with the Old South, died of heart failure in Madrid, where he lived, on Nov. 29. His wife kept the news of his death secret for five weeks at his request. His best-sellers included The Foxes of Harrow and The Saracen Blade.

Jason Soderlund, 19, the son of TV talk show host Sally Jessy Raphaël and husband Karl Soderlund, was seriously injured on Jan. 11, along with one of his two passengers, when a car he was driving hit a tree in New York's Putnam County. At press time Soderlund was in critical but stable condition.

Oscar winner Lou Gossett Jr., 55, filed for divorce from Cyndi James, the Star Search TV-show acting winner he married four years ago on Christmas Day. They have no children, although Gossett has two sons, Satie, 18, from his second marriage, and an adopted son, Sharron, 14....

Olympic gold medalist Edwin Moses, 37, who won the 400-meter hurdles at both the '76 and '84 Games, has split with his German-born wife Myrella, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, married for nine years, have no children.

In her heart, he's Mr. Right: Former Arizona Senator and 1964 Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, 83, will marry Susan Schaffer Wechsler, 51, a nurse and home healthcare administrator, on Feb. 9 at his home in Paradise Valley, Ariz. The famous conservative, a widower since the death of first wife Peggy six years ago, and Wechsler, a divorced mother of four, met when she began making house calls on Goldwater to take his blood pressure. Goldwater's granddaughter Allison, 28, said approvingly, "If you find someone at that age who turns you on, that's great."...
