Jazz tenor-saxophonist Charlie Ventura, 75, who earned his reputation as one of the great players of the swing era while touring with Gene Krupa, died of lung cancer on Jan. 17 in Atlantic City. Ventura also played with Stan Kenton, Charlie Parker and Count Basie....
Clark Taylor, 33, the only child of singer Judy Collins, was found dead in his estranged wife's St. Paul garage on Jan. 15, an apparent suicide. Taylor worked as an education assistant in the St. Paul school system and also played guitar. He and his wife, Alyson, who were divorcing, were parents of a 4-year-old daughter, Hollis.
A Montgomery County, Md., grand jury indicted actor Phill Lewis, 23, star of the short-lived CBS sitcom Teech, on charges of manslaughter and drunken driving stemming from a Dec. 28 accident that killed Isabel Duarte, 21, a Portuguese immigrant working as a nanny. Police say Lewis's blood alcohol level was nearly triple the legal limit. If convicted, Lewis faces up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine....
Lawyers for former Washington, D.C., Mayor Marion Barry, 55, have filed a $5.5 million defamation suit against officials at a minimum-security federal prison in Petersburg, Va., claiming that they damaged Barry's reputation and violated his civil rights in an investigation of allegations that Barry had engaged in oral sex with a female visitor. Barry, who is serving a six-month sentence for possession of cocaine, was transferred to a more secure facility in Loretto, Pa.
Out of the comic book closet: The latest Alpha Flight Team comic book may send kids flying to their parents with a birds-and-bees question for the '90s. "I am gay!" shouts Northstar in the March installment (which features a story about an AIDS baby I of the popular Marvel Comics series. The Toronto-based crime fighter had been billed previously as "Canada's most eligible bachelor."
Weighing in at only 9O lbs., Tracy Gold, 22, who plays Carol Seaver, the studious daughter on ABC's Growing Pains, was hospitalized for treatment of anorexia nervosa. Gold had lost more than 30 lbs. in the past few years. Costar Alan Thicke says, "There was a very obvious weight loss, and we knew there was a problem." The eight Pains episodes still to be shot this season have Gold's character off studying in London.
Actor Steve (Three Men and a Little Lady) Guttenberg, 32, is minus one lady in his life: his wife, model Denise Bixler, 26. They are divorcing after three years of marriage. The couple have no children.
