Valerie Bertinelli stars in this standard-issue melodrama as a newcomer in the Manhattan district attorney's office who finds out through a mob informant (Peter Dobson, formerly of Lenny) that the Big Apple is rotten with cops on the lake—corruption that may even extend to the man she admires most, her detective dad (George Dzundza, formerly of Law and Order).
As directed by Kevin James Dobson (not the Knot's Landing actor and no relation to Peter), the movie marches along quickly but can't overcome its artificialities. In yet another example of TV's blithe disregard for ethnic verisimilitude. Bertinelli and Dzundza are supposed to belong to an Irish family named Kilcoin, and Dobson, who is much more Irish-looking than either of them, is supposed to be an Italian stoolie named Martinelli. If Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club ever gets made into a TV movie, Bea Arthur will probably get the lead.
