by Darryl Strawberry with Art Rust Jr.
The lanky Dodger slugger and former Met gets the ugly stuff out right off the bat. In chapter 1 he deals with the 1990 domestic disturbance during which he brandished an unregistered pistol at his wife, Lisa, leading to his subsequent treatment for alcohol abuse. Though repentant, the Strawman lays much of the blame on his family, career pressures and the booze itself. That leaves the rest of the book for him to rail against the media, the Mets, managers, and manipulative front offices. Art Rust Jr. has couched all this finger-pointing in a clumsy mix of the florid and the vernacular. The awkward style probably isn't Darryl's fault. Apparently, nothing is. (Bantam, $20)
