Garth Brooks, 30, has something new to sing about since wife Sandy, 26, gave birth on July 8 in Nashville to their first child, daughter Taylor Mayne Pearl. Baby Brooks, 7 lbs. 4 ozs., was named after two of her dad's idols, James Taylor and Minnie Pearl, and for the state of Maine, where she was conceived....

Princess Diana's brother, Earl Spencer (known as Viscount Althorp before inheriting his father's title in March), 28, and his wife, ex-model Victoria Lockwood, 27, had twin daughters in London on July 10. The babies, delivered a month prematurely by cesarean section, were named Eliza (4 lbs. 15 ozs.) and katya (5 lbs. 4 ozs.). The couple already have an 18-month-old daughter, Kitty.

TV news elder statesman Eric Sevareid, 79, a major figure for five decades at CBS, died of stomach cancer July 9 in Washington. D.C. Sevareid was recruited in 1939 for CBS radio by the legendary broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow. As a charter member of that elite group of World War II reporters known as Murrow's Boys, Sevareid was the last American to broadcast from Paris before the Nazis marched in—he fled just before they arrived. In the decades that followed, he distinguished himself as a foreign correspondent, political analyst and news commentator. He retired at age 65 in 1977.

Actress Elena Monica, 27, filed a negligent-misrepresentation suit against Ray (Wiseguy) Sharkey, 39, on July 7 in Los Angeles. She claims that the actor is HIV positive, told her he had tested negative and infected her with the AIDS-causing virus when they had unprotected sex in 1991. Sharkey's lawyer said the actor plans to file a countersuit charging Monica with extortion.

Oscar winner Rod Steiger, 66, and his fourth wife, ex-singer Paula Ellis, 33, are expecting their first baby in February. Steiger has a daughter, Anna, 33, an opera singer, from his marriage to second wife Claire Bloom.

Aussie singing star Olivia Newton-John, 43, has recently revealed that she has breast cancer. Doctors, she says, expect her to make a full recovery.

Guns N' Roses' Axl Rose, 30, was into heavier metal than usual when he was handcuffed upon arrival at New York City's JFK Airport on July 12. Rose's arrest stemmed from earlier charges in St. Louis of misdemeanor assault and damage to property at a Guns concert last summer. He was released the same day from jail on $100,000 bail but faces up to 4½ years in prison and $4,500 in fines. No trial dale has been set yet.

The Right Knight: Soap stars Catherine (Capitol) Hickland and Michael (All My Children) knight wed in Malibu on June 27. She was previously married to David (Knight Rider) Hasselhoff, whose TV character was named, yep, you guessed it, Michael Knight....

Olympic gymnast turned actor Mitch (American Anthem) Gaylord, 31, is turning somersaults again after marrying onetime Playmate and now model-actress Deborah Driggs, 27, in L.A. on June 28.
