Picks and Pans Review: Night After Night with Allan Havey
Comedy Central (Weeknights, 11:30 P.M. ET)
The talk-show wars have unfortunately claimed Dennis Miller as their latest casually. Before reinforcements Chevy Chase and Whoopi Goldberg arrive, though, it's time to salute this late-night Comedy Central gabfest anchored by Allan Havey. There's no co-host or band to compete for the spotlight. There's no woofing crowd to please, just an audience of one person each night (selected from viewer mail), and there are only two guests—the likes of which might be William Shatner, Jerry Seinfeld or former competitor Miller—on every show.
A stand-up comedian, Havey is a smooth host, displaying entertaining traces of Letterman's irreverence, Leno's topical sense of humor and Bob Costas' genial interviewing ability.
Like any other television talk show, this one is inevitably burdened with the occasional lame joke or the irredeemably boring guest, but the considerably relaxed style of Night After Night provides night owl viewers with a Top 10 reason to stay up hours past their bedtime.
