An adventurous young Scottish woman (Samantha Bond) travels to Manchuria in 1903 to marry a stuffy British army officer (Adrian Rawlins). As the Sino-Russian War rages, she conducts an affair with a Japanese nobleman (Daisuke Ryu) and moves to his country, where she will reside for the next 40 years, initially as his concubine.
The depiction of her life offers some cultural revelations. But the ceremonious pace of this Masterpiece Theatre production, which airs on four consecutive Sundays, is so sedentary that it should have been titled Slogan.
