ON THE COVER 50
Like most teenagers today, cover subjects Betsy Ward and Darren Burge are exploring an uncharted sexual wilderness. In four months of dating, they have spent countless hours in the Wards' basement rec room, kissing and watching wide-screen TV. "We bonded over Twin Peaks" says Betsy. But they have never made love. That, explains Betsy, a parochial school senior, should happen "after a relationship is solid." Next year, Betsy will start college, leaving behind Darren, a junior at Chicago's Academy for the Arts. They plan to wait and see whether their love survives the separation. "If we're still together in the fall, I'll know there's a real bond," says Betsy. "Then, having sex would be okay."
In this issue, teens talk about the daunting sexual choices they face in a single day
