The baby of a rural widow (Kate Jackson) is abducted. On Halloween night 16 years later, a young man (Rick Schroder in spectacles and a dyed burrcut) turns up on her doorstep declaring himself the long-lost son. Trick or treat? Her live-in boyfriend (Chris Sarandon) is convinced she's clasping a viper to her breast.

Given that this is such a vilely violent thriller with both murder and mayhem getting very graphic treatment, the Rickster gives a pretty cagey performance. But he's hampered by a plot that's riddled with foreshadowing and a script that grows more trite as it proceeds.
