by Leah Loeb Fischer with Maria Polushkin Robbins

Forget "fancy schmancy," writes Fischer; this is good cooking without pretense, a book filled with rib-sticking recipes like Grandma used to make. Faithfully included are such traditional dishes as stuffed cabbage and meat tzimmes (brisket cooked with carrots, yams and prunes), as well as potato latkes (pancakes) and rugalach—a rich pastry with cream-cheese dough filled with raspberry jam and walnuts. You don't have to be Jewish to like Mama Leah's book—but you do have to be hungry. (Macmillan, $19.95)
