Picks and Pans Review: Harry and the Hendersons
Syndicated (Check local listings)
The 1987 comedy film about Sasquatch in suburbia has been turned into this thinny-thin sitcom. Bruce (Longtime Companion) Davison, Molly (It's Garry Shandling's Show) Cheek, Carol-Ann Plante and Zachary Bostrom are the Seattle family with the funky houseguest. The hairy Harry is played, as he was in the motion picture, by 7'2" Kevin Peter Hall.
This is truly situation comedy: All the wan attempts at humor stem from having a huge, wild creature lurching around the breakfast nook. The show averages about one decent punch line per episode. Come to think of it, though, ALF and Mork and Mindy probably wouldn't have been too funny if their stars had been mute.
Monster-maker Rick Baker's extraordinary makeup job on the big guy is all that snatches the series from the jaws of flunking.
