Picks and Pans Review: Blossom

NBC (Mondays, 8:30 P.M. ET)

The sitcom that scored big as a summer pilot makes a welcome return as a replacement series. Mayim Bialik stars as a 14-year-old going through puberty in a household with a musician father (Soap's Ted Wass) and two older brothers, one a recovering druggie (Michael Stoyanov) and one a narcissistic ninny (Joey Lawrence).

Bialik, memorable as Bette Midler's adolescent self in Beaches, has too much wind beneath her wings here. Her performance, though often irresistible, can veer off into full-baked hamminess. And while the show is nicely paced and has good character interplay, its tone is a mite artificial.
