>THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES TOM HANKS WAS SO unhappy about reaction to this film that he changed agents. Many people complained it wasn't faithful to the Tom Wolfe novel it was based on. But producer-director Brian De Palma's movie wasn't a write-off. Hanks, as a New York City investment hotshot whose life is ruined after he runs over a black mugger, shows convincing strain. And there are enough pokes at ruthless politicians, ruthless reporters and ruthless publicity-seekers to make it all resemble real life. (Warner)
