Picks and Pans Review: Dream on

HBO (Sun., July 21, 10 P.M. ET)

Somewhere, someone is devising another "new" show about a divorced dad or a private eye with wacky pals. Meanwhile this HBO series, focused on book editor Martin Tupper (Brian Benben), remains one of TV's few truly creative programs.

Watch for reruns of the season opener in which David Bowie plays a director. In this week's episode Tupper's wimp cousin (Dan Castellaneta) falls for his acid-tongued secretary (Denny Dillon). Tupper must rescue this doomed romance. That isn't much of a plot, but plot isn't what this show is about. Writing that creates real people, not the quip machines on most shtick-coms, is what makes Dream On perfect for those who insist there's nothing new on television.
