Artist Robert Motherwell, 76, a founder of the Abstract Expressionist movement, died July 16 after suffering a stroke at his summer home in Provincetown, Mass. Best known for a series of paintings he called Elegies to the Spanish Republic, Motherwell helped revolutionize American art in the post—World War II era with abstract compositions featuring bold brush strokes. "You let the brush take over and follow its own head," he once said.

Danny Bonaduce, 31, who played Danny Partridge on TV's The Partridge Family (1970-74), pleaded guilty on July 19 to reduced charges stemming from his assault last March on Darius Barney, 25, a transvestite prostitute in Phoenix. Barney claims Bonaduce paid him $20 for oral sex but began beating him when he refused Bonaduce's request for more. Bonaduce, an ex—radio disc jockey in Phoenix, faces a maximum jail term of 22 months and fines of $150,000 when he is sentenced Aug. 23. As for all the bad press he has garnered, Bonaduce says, "You'd think I was one of the Kennedys."...

Former Guns N' Roses drummer Steve Adler, 26, filed suit in Los Angeles on July 19 for unspecified damages against the band, claiming its members pressured him to use heroin and then axed him from the band in March 1990 after he entered a rehabilitation program.

Two weeks after a controversial nude photo of a gloriously pregnant Demi Moore graced Vanity Fair's August cover, the actress delivered a 5 lb. 15 oz. daughter on July 20 in L.A. Moore, 28, and husband Bruce Willis, 36, named the baby Scout LaRue, taking the first name from the child narrator of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The couple has one other child, daughter Rumer Glenn, who turns 3 this month and is named after British novelist Rumer Godden....

Katie Couric, 34, coanchor of The Today Show, gave birth in Washington, D.C., on July 23 to her first child, Elinor Tully Monahan, a 7 lb. 7 oz. girl. Couric's husband, Jay Monahan, is a D.C. attorney.

Movie hunk Rob Lowe, 27, wed makeup artist Sheryl Berkoff, 30, in a private ceremony on July 22 in L.A. The two met in 1989 while working on Bad Influence....

Movie producer Gale Anne (Terminator 2) Hurd and director Brian (Bonfire of the Vanities) De Palma married on July 20 in San Francisco. They are expecting a baby in September.

Katey Sagal, Fox TV's Married...with Children tart homemaker, is expecting a baby in early December. The father is Jack White, a photographer and drummer with whom she has been living. There is no word on marriage plans. Sagal's pregnancy will be written into the show.
