>HOLY UPSTAGING! BATMAN

Not since Laurence Olivier put Dustin Hoffman under his dental drill in Marathon Man has movie villainy been acted out with such gusto by a terrific actor. Jack Nicholson's manic Joker allowed lots of people to laugh all the way to the bank—Nicholson included—and added color and energy to production designer Anton Furst's expressionistic Gotham City. Michael Keaton as a stolid Batman was inevitably overshadowed, and underappreciated, but then he got Kim Basinger, and he's the one who'll probably get to come back for the sequel. (Warner)
