CNN (Sun., Dec. 10, 10:30 A.M. ET)

Grade B-

The title sounds like one of those horrible half-hour sales pitches that have taken over independent stations late at night, trying to pass themselves off as real programming. Actually Power over Pain is a moderately informative medical special examining pain and its chronic sufferers.

The first portion of the show focuses on a nondrug therapy plan used at a Boston rehabilitation center. Then the show jumps abruptly into special problems faced by athletes, specifically hockey players Jari Kurri and Randy Gregg of the Edmonton Oilers and former football great Jim Otto (the Raiders' old 00).

CNN medical correspondent Dan Rutz should have come armed with some medical breakthrough, or at least a stronger overview of the subject. As it is, Power over Pain at times seems haphazardly lashed together.
