Why does the TV season start in the fall? Theories range from the crass (big advertising bucks roll in from carmakers) to the mystical (a cabal of Freemasons originally ran the networks and the launch coincides with a Druidic harvest ceremony). Programmers at PBS take a more logical approach, kicking off the season as the calendar turns. If you're a devotee of ambitious, cerebral TV like After the War (see below), your time has come.
