>BABY ANIMALS

There's no painless way to get the kids to send holiday-gift thank-you notes. But this Sierra Club postcard book might ease the process. Its 22 detachable cards feature photos of such creatures as four snuggling Eastern cottontail kits or four cheetah cubs—their fur so fluffy they look blow-dried. A brief foreword discusses how rapidly animals must mature: "A moose cow cannot carry her calf to safety should a wolf attack, so the calf must learn to stand up and walk within hours of its birth." There is also a plea for protecting the environment, so "babies of all species are free to grow up and live out the full span of their lives." (Sierra Club, $8.95)
