Picks and Pans Review: Grand Slam

CBS (Sun., Jan. 28, after Super Bowl)

When Robert De Niro and John Ashton played dueling bounty hunters in the adventure-comedy film Midnight Run, it made for good cinema. Hold that concept, cheapen and flatten it out and cast John Schneider and Paul Rodriguez in the roles, and know what? It still makes for pretty good television. Credit lots of car chases, fistfights, gunfights, explosions and Rodriguez-initiated comic relief. Schneider is a badass nicknamed Hardball. His secret weapon: nailing miscreants in the head or chest with a baseball. Rodriguez is a barrio survivor who cruises around in a vintage low-rider Chevy.

Grand Slam? More like a bloop double. But at least it gets on base. On Wednesday the series moves to 8 P.M. ET, the old Beauty and the Beast slot.
