>STOP IT!: HEAVY PETTING

While at times it mopes along like a dreary date, this documentary on '50s teen sex, directed by Obie Benz, has its virtues. It mixes clips from such films as The Wild One and Rebel Without a Cause with interviews—subjects include David Byrne (unnervingly jittery), Abbie Hoffman (predictably vulgar) and novelist William Burroughs (predictably glum). Actor Josh Mostel is funny discussing a masturbation self-help group he took part in at summer camp, and performance artist Laurie Anderson tells how she got her boy-pleasing girlish smile: Her hair was stretched into such a tight ponytail the corners of her mouth were permanently pulled back.
