Let's not count all the ways that the experience of going to a movie has changed—it would take too long and be too depressing. But let's do spend a bit of time lamenting the demise of the cartoon short as a regular part of movie theaters' programs. Watching a good Bugs Bunny or Donald Duck, even a Tom and Jerry, was not only most entertaining in its own right (check out one of the Bugs or D.D. anthologies on videotape), but it also served to provide the audience members with a gentle transitional state, allowing them to ease into the appropriate mood of fantasy and suspension of real life. Now the world too often remains too much with us, making both escape and understanding that much harder to achieve.
