"But will it play in Peoria?" That's the question ostensibly asked of any entertainment project that aspires to make cash registers jingle in Heartland America (as opposed to the Effete East and the Way-out West). Peoria, Ill. (pop. 120,000), about 130 miles south of Chicago, thus has become, in myth if not in fact, a tastemaker. So we decided to find out what is playing in Peoria these days—and, after we saw their choices, Peorians seem more typical than ever. That's no surprise to them. Declares Tim Carley, a bartender at a Main Street tavern: "This is Middle America. The mainstream." Now, that plays well in Peoria.
