Prime time has been very good lately to the original Odd Couple. First Jack Lemon got a meaty role in The Murder of Mary Phagan, and now Walter Matthau gets to sink his choppers into this substantial, period TV drama.

Crafty old Matthau is marvelous as a broken-down lawyer in Colorado who is pressured into defending a German prisoner of war (Peter Firth) accused of killing the town doctor in 1944. Matthau's investigation leads him to some deep, dark secrets at the POW camp.

Under the modulated direction of Joseph Sargent, The Incident is an atmospherically detailed drama with a solid cast that includes William Schallert, Harry Morgan, Robert Carradine, Barnard Hughes and Susan Blakely.
