Mare Winningham stars as a a private investigator in Houston who assumes identities, usually saucy vamps, to get people to betray their secrets. Then she finds herself falling in love with the prime suspect (Peter Gallagher) in a brutal murder case. There's a prickly, low-life flavor to these characters, never far from violence.
The mood gets increasingly tumid from the point when Mare agrees to wear a wire for the police, but the first hour gives Winningham a rare break from melodramatic martyrdom in heavy TV movies like God Bless the Child. She revels in the freedom, giving a performance that is both energetic and enterprising. Co-stars include Robert Harper and G.W. Bailey.
