Picks and Pans Review: The Marshall Chronicles
Chicken Soup didn't die when they canceled it earlier this season. They just took the Jackie Mason character and sent him back to high school. Voilà: The Marshall Chronicles. The star, Joshua Rifkind, dispenses wisdom and comedy in equal measure as he deals with home, school and the subways. Right in the middle of a conversation, this teenage borscht-belt philosopher will turn to address the camera with a gag or a precocious insight.
The pilot does have some good bits, such as an English teacher reverently reciting to her class the lyrics to Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" as if it were Tennyson.
Rifkind is admirable, but his character is so good, so noble and so wise that he gets on your nerves PDQ.
