Picks and Pans Review: Carly in Concert: My Romance

HBO (Sun., April 15, 10 P.M. ET)

C+

Notoriously stage-shy singer Carly Simon ventures in front of the HBO cameras (and a make-believe nightclub crowd) to interpret standards by Rodgers and Hart and others from her new album, My Romance. She sounds good and looks great in her clingy, shimmering outfits. But her patter and transported facial expressions seem forced and put on. And Carly, who is clearly much more comfortable playing to the band than to the audience, has only one movement in her repertoire: a modest, restrained hip sway. Special musical guests include saxophonist Michael Brecker and singer-pianist Harry Connick Jr.
