Picks and Pans Review: Shannon's Deal

Last year Jamey Sheridan starred in a well-received TV movie as a tough-but-tender Philadelphia lawyer, a big-firm hotshot laid low by gambling. Now Shannon's Deal returns as a low-key action series with a sly, shambling sense of humor. File it under "Rockford as shyster."

You know the show has a hip aura merely by the slate of guest stars (Iggy Pop, Tanya Tucker and David Crosby) who appear in the debut this week.

Elizabeth Peña is back as Shannon's secretary, and Martin (Miami Vice) Ferrero has been cast as the gurney-chaser down the hall.

John Sayles wrote the movie, this week's episode and one to air later. The question is whether the show will keep its edge once he has turned over the scripts to other hands. For now...
