One of the first books published on the subject and already a best-seller (PEOPLE, March 5), this slender guide remains one of the best handbooks to help you make your home and life environmentally sound.

Some of the suggestions seem a bit obvious by now (use a clean detergent, turn off the water while shaving and brushing your teeth), while others bring a fresh perspective to our unthinking routines (stop junk mail by writing to the Direct Marketing Association in New York, cut six-pack rings to protect fish and dolphins). There may be those who argue that 50 Simple Things is too simple. For them, we suggest the kind of sequel that's likely to turn up if this book and similar volumes don't work: 100 Very Difficult Things You Must Do to Save the Earth. (Earthworks, paper, $4.95)
