The heroine of this animated feature ranks with Disney's top leading ladies—Snow White, Cinderella, Dumbo's mom or Faline (known as Mrs. Bambi in those days). The story, with Ariel the mermaid falling for a landlubber, has the requisite Disney villain—a sea witch with Pat Carroll's evil voice—and happy ending. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's music is engaging, and the kaleidoscopic "Under the Sea" number, with Samuel E. Wright as the voice of Sebastian the crab (a crustacean Polonius), is a classic.
