Abandoned on a Thames embankment as an infant, a boy (James Alder) is raised by a suburban couple (Roger Rees and Alison Steadman). An elderly neighbor, convinced that the boy is the offspring of her missing daughter, leaves him a fortune and turns everyone's life topsy-turvy.
Alder is rather ingenuous but likable, Rees is very appealing, and Miriam Margoyles is quite winning as a sort of female Fagin who takes in the boy when he runs away to London.
Stodgy most of the time but with a sharp air of mystery occasionally wafting through, this installment of the children's anthology Wonderworks has a curious texture, like bread pudding with hard sauce ladled on top.
