This convoluted Italian folktale pits kings against witches against ogres against trees before the fair lady is freed. Mix in the fact that "the princess looks just like the ogre's daughter, except for the hair, sometimes," as Kate points out, and the puzzle increases. No problem. Even Nick, too young for the story, was intrigued. (Putnam, $14.95—ages 5-9)
