Picks and Pans Review: The Garden Book

This pint-size primer, which comes with a miniature greenhouse, is billed as a guide for kids 10 and under, but even precocious youngsters will need help from adults in sowing and tending their first gardens. There are instructions on how to prepare soil, germinate seeds, make root cuttings and stake plants, along with specific tips for cultivating a range of vegetables (tomatoes, cukes, lettuce) and flowers (petunias, snapdragons, marigolds, among others). While the cheerful illustrations are explicit, explanations are often too erudite for young ones, but this is a fine little guide for grown-ups. (Workman, paper, $9.95)
