This week we look in on Los Angeles, which is busy looking in on itself—its fictional self, that is. Dominick Dunne's An Inconvenient Woman, a roman a clef set in L.A. and ostensibly based on the Alfred Bloomingdale-Vicki Morgan scandal, is a hot item in La-La Land (see Pages, below) and the talk of the cocktail party set. Meanwhile, as a company town, Los Angeles might watch those movie-poster sales (see Etc.) as a possible predictor of box office success. If there's any correlation, the likes of Warren (Dick Tracy) Beatty and Tom (Days of Thunder) Cruise are in for a very bankable summer. (Besides, you have to appreciate any list that includes both Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and The Ten Commandments.)
