Considering what a staple it has been of American theater and film, it's remarkable that the musical has been so overlooked as a television genre. However, the recently announced programming for next fall looks like a small-screen Broadway. NBC, for instance, has both Hull St. High, with choreographer Kenny Ortega directing, and Fresh Prince of Bel Air, co-executive-produced by Quincy Jones and featuring rap star Will Smith, better known as the royal half of the duo Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. The most intriguing musical offering is ABC's Cop Rock, a gritty police drama punctuated by big production numbers. As he is wont to do, creator Steve (Hill Street Blues) Bochco has handed his wife, Barbara Bosson, a leading role as the Mayor. I guess he's entitled. But fair warning: The first time Bosson bursts into an aria, I'm turning off Cop Rock and I'm not coming back.
