Original London Cast

In 1976, British bon vivant Ned Sherrin created this salute. With a talented cast that included Sherrin, Millicent Martin, Julia McKenzie and David Kernan, the Sondheim catalog got a charming once-over.

Now available on CD, this show highlights the best of Sondheim's first 20 years. Follies and Company are well-represented. But as with Marry Me a Little, some of the treats are the obscure songs, such as Martin italicizing the sexual playfulness of "I Never Do Anything Twice," which Sondheim wrote for the film The Seven PerCent Solution.

Of course, one misses more recent Sondheim achievements: "No One Is Alone," from Into the Woods, say. Until the sequel, though, Side by Side by Sondheim is a great theater party. (RCA Victor)
