Picks and Pans Review: An Educated Slice

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and Co, are better known for their passions for baseball and hockey. But their progenitor, Schulz, has played golf since he was 15 and holds an 11 handicap, though, the book jacket notes, "he has never made a hole in one and has decided to give up trying."

The title of this collection of golf-oriented Peanuts cartoons comes from a 1966 strip in which Snoopy, after hitting an obviously faded drive, snorts "Rats!" and mutters to himself, "I have an 'educated slice,' but it only went to the third grade!"

While golfaholic Snoopy is featured in most of these cartoons, in one sequence Marcie and Peppermint Patty try caddying. Marcie says, "I can't tell a par from a birdie, sir"; Patty replies, "Those are bowling terms, Marcie. Don't embarrass me!"

This sweet-spirited collection would make a nice little present for Father's Day or for anyone who thinks happiness has less to do with warm puppies than it does with hitting a strong second shot. (Topper, paper, $8.95)
