by Beverly Cleary

Cleary's ability to create fictional kids and parents as real as those around your own dinner table buoys this story about a stubborn third grader who won't learn cursive writing. Maggie—so bad at cursive, she writes it "Muggie"—never caves in, but comes through, thanks to the resourceful if annoying Mrs. Leeper, ("Boys and girls," she greets her students, "let's have a happy teacher today.") For one second grader, there was a bonus: "I never thought I could read script, but I did do it, pretty well," said Kate, 8. (Morrow, $11.95; ages 7 and up)
