After a marvelous opening—a smalltown Louisiana beauty shop gabfest among Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts—this movie reveals itself as a female chauvinist diatribe. All the women are martyrs; all the male characters are wimps—including Sam Shepard, as Parton's husband. Director Herbert Ross and writer Robert Harling, adapting his own off-Broadway hit, sell out their gender and distort their melodramatic story. (RCA/Columbia)
