The casts on soap operas generally stay pretty stable. But when Lane Davies left the pivotal role of Mason Capwell on NBC's Santa Barbara to travel around the world, it seemed to set off a chain reaction of show-hopping. Terry Lester, who had played Jack on CBS's The Young and the Restless, came over to play Mason. Peter Bergman then jumped ABC's All My Children to play Jack. AMC also lost Debbi Morgan and Robert Gentry to NBC's Generations. CBS's The Bold and the Beautiful signed on soap veterans Brian Patrick Clarke and Todd McKee. This week, Genie Francis, best known as Laura on General Hospital but more recently as Diana on Days of Our Lives, joins All My Children. Ay, caramba! The joint is jumping. When you sit down to watch the Daytime Emmys (see box), you may find you need a scorecard to tell the players.
