This six-part Masterpiece Theatre opus relates the exploits of an RAF squadron billeted at a French château in 1939.

Like most MT productions, this work (which airs Sundays through Aug. 12) boasts good acting (Tim Woodward, Richard Hope, Neil Dudgeon) and a wonderful re-creation of period detail. It's also rather dry and leisurely. They don't begin to test their mettle—and their Spitfires against the Luftwaffe—until the third episode. And in any case, Twelve O'Clock High it's not. You won't find yourself instantly captivated by this talky drama, but if you put in some time with it, you may find yourself waylaid.
