A couple's divorce settlement stipulates that she (Carrie Fisher) must pay him (John Sessions) spousal support unless he remarries. That codicil sets off a chain of schemes in this cohesive, if synthetic, romantic comedy set in Paris. Fisher hires an actress (Rosanna Arquette) to take her ex off her hands, coaching her on how to be Sessions's ideal mate. He counters with his own conspiracy.
The female leads, especially Fisher, handle the material with aplomb. But Sessions's accent slips all over the place; he's not alone—the male characters all seem intent on spanning the globe. Despite the migratory phonetics, though, the movie is spunky and flavorful for a cabler.
